Stender Reminds Residents Earth Hour is This Saturday

The global event takes place from 8:30 to 9:30 p.m. on March 27.

Assemblywoman Linda Stender, sponsor of Assembly Concurrent Resolution 106, "Earth Hour," wants to remind all residents to shut their lights off for one hour this Saturday night, March 27, from 8:30 to 9:30 p.m.

Created by the World Wildlife Fund in 2007, Earth Hour calls for people across the world to collectively turn their lights off for one hour to help  In 2009, 4,100 cities in 87 countries and over 1 billion participants participated in the event.

Stender, Chair of the Assembly State Government, passed the bill this past February and is encouraging as many households as possible to participate.

"The goal of Earth Hour is to raise awareness of climate change, and work on ways to conserve for the future," Stender said.

Fanwood also recently proclaimed this Saturday "Earth Hour" in the borough. While the measure stirred a bit of controversy at the time, Mayor Colleen Mahr maintained that the event will demonstrate that Fanwoodians are global stewards.

The borough will be turning off lights at Town Hall, the Carriage House, and all other non-essential lighting in town for Earth Hour, and encourages residents to do the same.
