Updated: Storm Expected to Bring Snow to Scotch Plains-Fanwood

Several inches of snow are expected.

The National Weather Service is predicting that the Scotch Plains-Fanwood area could see lots of the wintery white stuff on Saturday.

A winter storm watch is in effect from tomorrow morning into Sunday. The weather service says that a deepening low pressure over the Atlantic Ocean Saturday and Saturday night could result in periods of heavy snow and gusty winds throughout the area.

Five to ten inches of snow are possible, as are wind gusts up to 35 miles per hour, according to the weather service. Sleet and ice may also occur.

Scotch Plains Public Works Director Kevin Ward says his department has its own contracted weather service, which is showing a more conservative forecast for the township.

"It says the storm's intensity will be a half inch to one inch per hour, with a possible dusting by 1 p.m., 2 inches by 4 p.m., and a max of 1 to 3 inches by 8 p.m. Saturday," Ward said. "This is supposed to be a very dry snow that drifts across the roadway and doesn't stick much."

Even if Scotch Plains gets the maximum snowfall, the 1 to 3 inches according to his forecast, Ward said they probably won't have to go out with their plows.
