Weekend Rundown: Celeb Chefs, War Re-Enactors, and More

A look at what's going on in our area.

As the weather warms up, our area is becoming more bustling with activities. Here's a rundown of just a few of the events going on in Scotch Plains-Fanwood and elsewhere this weekend.

 

Saturday, May 15

-Fans of the Bravo reality show Top Chef will be able to enjoy meals created by the contestants Saturday in Westfield. The show's nationwide 21 city promotional tour will be setting up in the Lord & Taylor parking lot all day Saturday to provide a taste of the show. Featuring Arianne Duarte from season five and Ashley Merriman from season six, the show's customized 18-wheel semi will park and demonstrations will occur three times during the day. The demonstrations will occur at 10:30 a.m., 12 p.m. and 1:30 p.m. on Saturday. Tickets are available on Bravo's website and onsite on Saturday. The event is being co-sponsored locally by Comcast. -Re-enactors from the 43rd New York Volunteer Infantry will visit the Scotch Plains Public Library from 1 to 5 p.m., offering attendees a glimpse of how Union troops lived, worked, and fought during the Civil War. The event is part of the library's Abraham Lincoln exhibition. For more information, go here.

-Temple Sholom will bring a little Las Vegas flair to Fanwood Saturday night, as it sponsors its Casino Night. The evening's fun is open to the entire community and will include such popular games as roulette, poker and blackjack. All funds raised will be used for Temple Sholom's numerous community, educational and religious programs. Tickets are $20 for $40 worth of casino chips or $36 for $100 worth. Chips may be used for gambling and to buy tickets to enter an end-of-the-evening raffle for exciting prizes such as gift baskets and services. For more information, go here.

Sunday, May 16

-The Scotch Plains Rescue Squad is hosting an open house from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. in honor of EMS Week 2010. Attendees will be able to tour the building, meet the members, see the ambulances, get a free blood pressure screening and enjoy some delicious snacks and drinks. There will also be fun activities and crafts for the kids. Admission is free. For more information, go here.

-The Fanwood Recreation Comission is sponsoring the 2nd annual Training Wheel Toss from 1 to 4 p.m., which aims to help area youth learn to ride their bikes sans training wheels in a single afternoon. The event, which will be held in the Union County Vo-Tech Schools parking lot, required pre-registration. For more information about the program, go here

-The Westfield Recreation Department is sponsoring a 5K race and 1-mile family walk/run at Tamaqes Park from 9 to 11:30 a.m. The event raises money to benefit drug and alcohol-free programs. Obtain a registration form or register online here.

-This year's Master Gardeners of Union County annual Spring Garden Fair and Plant Sale is set for Sunday from noon to 5 p.m., rain or shine, at the Union County Trailside Nature and Science Center in the Watchung Reservation in Mountainside. Along with flowers, shrubs and ground covers, the sale features vegetable and herb seedlings. For more information, go here.

-Maplewood will host its 10th Annual MayFest on Springfield Avenue on Sunday. Starting at 11 a.m., more than 75 local vendors, artists and other community members will set up shop on the street. Additionally, there will also be live music, activities and rides for children and a large amount of food.

-This weekend also marks Millburn's 18th Annual Classic Car Show. The event will take place on Sunday from noon to 4 p.m. on Millburn Avenue between Spring and Main streets. The event is free. With over 125 cars on display, there is something for everyone. There will be judging and trophies for winners. Live music and raffles will also take place throughout the day.
