Concerts, outdoor markets, and an art gallery reception hit Scotch Plains and Fanwood.

Cultural and culinary events abound in the township and the borough this weekend. From an art reception to jazz quartets, garage bands, outdoor fairs, and a "dunk-a-police-officer" booth, there is much to do. Check it out:

FRIDAY, JUNE 11

Local Artists, Diverse Artistry

Browse pastels, Chinese watercolors, ink drawings, and photographs at the grand opening reception of the Wings Gallery and Art Studio, from 7-9 p.m. at 228 South Avenue in Fanwood. The gallery shares space with Classic Framing and Gifts, across the street from the train station.

The debut exhibition, "Personal Reflections," features the work of four Scotch Plains and Fanwood artists: Paula Pearl, Connie Pinkowski, Steve Willis, and Jocelyn Wong. Tonight, you can ask them about their work, rub shoulders with local politicians, talk art with owner Helen Ling, and peruse the studio's summer art class schedule.

Battle of the Bands

Fine art not your thing? Check out the crooners, singer-songwriters, thrashers, and performance artists at Scotch Plains-Fanwood High School's final Battle of the Bands of the 2010-2011 school year.

The show starts at 6:30 p.m. and will feature nine student music groups: Mackson, the Egotesticals, Be Still Cody, Triangle Lord, Boris the Whale, I AM XNTR, Awkward Silence, Space Jams, and Hudson Sound. Awards will be presented at 10:50 p.m.

Finale of the Fanwood Spring Arts Series

The Borough cut short this monthly music festival due to budget constraints, so Saturday night's performance will be the last.

At 7:00 p.m. at Fanwood's Carriage House, listen to vocalist Tony Robinson, followed by the Evan Levine Jazz Quartet. The suggested donation is $7, and $5 for seniors and students.

SUNDAY, JUNE 13

Fanwood Street Fair

Shop, meet new business owners, and dunk a Fanwood police officer at the Business and Professional Association's annual spring street fair Sunday. The fair takes place from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m., in Fanwood's downtown district at Martine Avenue and South Avenue.
