9th Annual Jewish Film Festival of Central NJ - SIMON and THE OAKS

An epic drama spanning the years 1939 to 1952, this is the gripping story of Simon who grows up in a loving working class family on the outskirts of Gothenburg, Sweden. Always feeling out of place, but intellectually gifted, he persists in convincing his father to send him to a school normally reserved for young men of professional families. There he meets Isak, the son of a wealthy Jewish bookseller who has fled Germany. Simon is dazzled by the cultural offerings of Isak’s father. Isak is drawn to helping Simon’s father build boats. The personal issues of each boy draw the two families together, creating dependencies, revealing secrets and vividly illustrating the situation faced by Jews in Sweden during World War II.

Recipient of a record 13 nominations for the 2012 Sweden’s Guldbagge Awards (the local equivalent of the Oscars), including Best Picture, Best Director, Best Actress and Best Cinematography.

Also showing: THE FORK
Running Time: 5 minutes
