"A Place for Us"

The Friends to Preserve the Shady Rest are proud to announce a second showing of the documentary film, “A Place for Us”.  This film tells the story of the Shady Rest Golf and Country Club history and golf pro John Shippen.  The film will be shown on October 17, 2013 at 7:30 PM.

The Shady Rest was the nation’s first African-American owned golf and country club. The club house is now owned by Scotch Plains Township; now known as the Scotch Hills Country Club.

The Foundation has endeavored to preserve the historical accomplishments of John Shippen as well as the memory of Shady Rest, currently the Scotch Hills Country Club.  John Matthew Shippen, Jr. earned the status of FIRST AMERICAN BORN PROFESSIONAL GOLFER to enter the United States Open Championship.
