EEF of SPF and School District to Co-Sponsor Leadership Training for Middle School Students

The Educational Enrichment Foundation of Scotch Plains Fanwood and the SPF School District will co-sponsor a leadership training conference for middle school students on Feb. 15, 2014.  This year SPF LTC 100 will train over 130 new student leaders.  SPF LTC 100 takes some of the best features of the New Jersey Association of Student Councils (NJASC) four-day Leadership Training Conference (LTC) held in the summer and condenses them into one day.   This program, under the leadership of Phyllis Mirabella  (EEF of SPF),  is in its fifth year. This year's SPF LTC 100 will train 133 Delegates. After this year, the SPF LTC 100 program will have trained over 580 students to become leaders in their schools and communities. The program is possible due to the efforts of over 70 volunteers.   The volunteers include Junior Counselors (JC's) and Senior Counselors (SC's).  Please find a link to the New Jersey Association of Student Council  (NJASC) Leadership Training Conference (LTC):  http://www.njasc.org/ltc/index.html  Special thanks to Wakefern Corporation of Elizabeth, ShopRite of Garwood and Nick's Pizza and Deli in Fanwood who provide very generous donations for this event. This program is cosponsored by the Education Enrichment Foundation of Scotch Plains-Fanwood and the SPF School District  Below is the day's schedule, classes and full descriptions of roles:

Conference & Class Description:

100 Student Delegates, recommended by the faculty of Park and Terrill Middle Schools and St. Bartholomew’s Academy (grades 5-8), participate in an event that develops, reinforces, and promotes leadership skills.

Junior Counselors (JCs) are experienced student leaders from middle and high school that lead Delegate groups through the day's activities.

Senior Counselors (SCs) are high school and college students and community volunteers that facilitate the day’s sessions and handle logistics, security, etc.

A true Leadership Camp the Junior Counselors coordinate welcoming activities and icebreakers, so that each Delegate gets to better know their fellow group members before the following leadership sessions begin:

·    Speaking With Ease!  What makes a good speaker?  Gain awareness of important principles of effective Public Speaking.

·    Effective Communication!  Do people listen when you speak?  Do you really listen to other people?  There is a difference between “hearing” and “listening”. Find out how good a listener you really are.

·    Elected to Lead Everyone! Do you really know who your fellow students are, and how does this affect what you think about them and what they think about you? You'll have fun as you find out what "headbands" you would like to wear.

·    T.E.A.M. Time! “Together Everyone Achieves More”.  What qualities make an effective leader?  How do different types of leaders affect group performance? Team Time shows the difference between transactional and transformational leadership.

LTC 100 takes some of the best features of the New Jersey Association of Student Councils (NJASC) four-day Leadership Training Conference (LTC) program held in the summer and condenses them into one day.
