Willow Grove Church Launches Homeless Hosting Ministry

Willow Grove Presbyterian Church in Scotch Plains has renewed its commitment to hosting homeless families in Union County as part of the Family Promise of Union County mobile shelter network.  Willow Grove Church plans an informal orientation to this revitalized program on Sunday, September 15, 2013 at 11:30 a.m.  A Family Promise representative will speak about the program, show an informational video, and guide a question and answer time.  Tours of the facilities are also available immediately after the orientation.  New and existing volunteers, and anyone wanting to know more should come to this orientation, open to the public.

Starting September 29, 2013, Willow Grove Church will be hosting up to 14 homeless guests with guidance from Family Promise of Union County.  On August 1st, 2013, Family Promise gave Willow Grove Church ten new folding beds to aid in this important effort to combat homelessness.  Jill Segulin, the Willow Grove Church shelter’s coordinator told Claas Ehlers, of Family Promise, “This is truly a godsend for our program.” Willow Grove Church has been hosting for 25 years, and had recently taken a two-year hiatus while the program was being restructured.  Although their beds are not that old, several beds were in desperate need of repair or replacement.  Three years ago, the program received all new towels for the guests, and this year, several sets of new linens were added to the existing supply.

Like other congregations within the Family Promise network, Willow Grove Church will host for four weeks, spread throughout the program year.  Coordinator Jill Segulin comments, “We are so excited for this opportunity to serve the local community with mission work that affects people’ everyday lives---families like us, many with young children.  These families work, they play, they go to school; they just don’t have a home.”
