Free Income Tax Return Preparation for Senior Citizens and Area Residents with Low to Moderate Income.
AARP Tax-Aide, a program of the AARP Foundation in conjunction with the IRS, and the State of NJ, Division of Taxation, is offering appointments for free income tax return preparation to senior citizens and area residents with low to moderate income, Monday and Tuesday mornings from February 6 to April 17. IRS certified volunteer tax preparers conduct the program at The Scotch Plains Public Library, 1927 Bartle Avenue, Scotch Plains. Assistance is provided for federal and state income taxes, and the Property Tax Reimbursement Program (PTR 1 & 2). Tax returns for the current year will be filed electronically. Electronic filing benefits taxpayers with faster receipt of refunds. Any taxes due would not be payable until April 17, and the taxpayers will be provided with vouchers to submit with payments.
It is important for the accuracy and completeness of the 2011 tax return that the taxpayer bring a copy of the 2010 federal and state returns and all 2011federal and New Jersey tax forms. If you receive a pension or annuity, please bring the date that you began to receive payments.
Required documents: Social Security Cards or comparable documentation for you, your spouse, and dependents.
Income related documents: Forms W2, Unemployment Compensation statements, SSA 1099, 1099R, and other 1099 forms showing income, Brokerage statements or other documentation showing the cost basis (purchase price) and date purchased for all securities or property sold or transferred during the tax year.
Expense related documents: Forms showing federal, state and property taxes paid, 1098 forms, documentation of medical, dental, non-reimbursed prescriptions, co-pays, charities and mortgage interest. Receipts for expenses need to be organized by type of expense and legible.
Direct deposit/debit of refund/balance due: An official bank document, e.g. a check or other bank statement, with the bank routing number, your account number and name printed on it. A check in your checkbook is acceptable.
To make an appointment, please call the Scotch Plains Public Library at 908-322-5007 X201 or schedule one at the circulation desk at the library, today, for appointments, Monday and Tuesday mornings, February 6, until April 17. In the case of taxpayers filing joint returns, both taxpayers should be present to authorize the electronic filing.
