Scotch Plains Plant-A-Tree Campaign Hopes to Replenish Those Lost to Sandy

On hand for the first-ever event were more than a dozen members of local Daisy troops and their parents.

This release was received from Councilwoman Colleen Gialanella.

The Township of Scotch Plains and the Recreation Commission held its first ever Plant-A-Tree Campaign yesterday afternoon in honor of Earth Day and in response to the many trees lost to Super Storm Sandy.

On hand for the event were more than a dozen members of local Daisy troops and their parents. The enthusiastic volunteers distributed nearly four hundred seedling trees and spoke with residents about the importance of caring for the Earth.

The Idea was first proposed by Colleen Gialanella, Council Liaison to the Recreation Commission. “Teaching our young about ecology by offering seedlings to the community is a great first step in the process. We should be celebrating earth day everyday by recycling and cutting down on our carbon footprint by using more energy efficient cars and appliances.

As the Deputy Mayor, “we are studying making our township facilities more energy efficient with the hope of saving our taxpayers money and helping to save the earth as well.”

Councilman Lou Beckerman was inspired by the overwhelming response, commenting, “I participated in the very first Earth Day celebration in 1970 and I am so proud of our Scotch Plains Daisies for continuing the tradition of honoring the earth.

The Recreation Commission would like to thank all that participated in the event from the volunteers, to the professional staff and are looking forward to making this event an annual tradition.
