Scotch Plains Teen Saves Fellow Student by Performing Heimlich

Jazmyn Carrington, 16, learned the technique during summer camp counselor training at the Scotch Plains Recreation Department.

County officials have just commended Scotch Plains teen Jazmyn Carrington of Scotch Plains for her quick actions in saving the life of a fellow student at Union County Academy for Performing Arts in Scotch Plains by performing the Heimlich maneuver recently. 

Carrington, a 16-year-old theater major was rehearsing for the school play along with her classmates when the theater teacher was alerted that a student was choking in the lobby on food provided to the group for dinner break. 

Carrington ran toward the choking student, who was pointing towards his throat, gasping for air and turning red.

Using the techniques taught to her at the Scotch Plains Recreation Department during the CPR training and certification class required for all summer camp counselors, Carrington informed the victim she was certified and asked if he’d like her help. 

Upon receiving a nod yes, Carrington went behind the victim and performed the Heimlich maneuver and dislodged several pieces of chicken from his throat.
