2-Year-Old Scotch Plains Girl Finally Receives Medical Marijuana

Brian Wilson calls this 'a tiny step forward,' as the strain they received is not the one proven successful in children with seizures.

The Wilson family of Scotch Plains, who made headlines for their fight to obtain medical marijuana for their 2-year-old, were the third patients in line Monday at the Compassionate Care Center—a medical marijuana dispensary that just opened Monday in Egg Harbor Township.

Though the Wilsons left with the dispensary with 1 ounce of marijuana, they still say they need to cook it down into a butter or an oil and then have it tested by the Health Department before giving it to Vivian, according to NJ.com.

Also, the marijuana they received is not the high-cannabidiol (CBD) strain they had hoped for, but rather a strain that is higher in THC than it is in CBD, the Wilsons told Patch.

It's the high CBD strains that the have proven successful in treating children with Dravet's syndrome, like Vivian, but they hope that this strain could at least be helpful in weaning their daughter off of some of the benzodiazepines she currently takes.

"It's great to see them open, but it's not going to help us much right now," Brian Wilson said in the article. "It's another tiny step forward."
