DC's New 52: Best Villains of Week 8!

The last of the #2s! Two months in and DC's New 52 are still going strong. Here are my top villains for the eighth week of the New 52.

The last of the #2s! Two months in and DC's New 52 are still going strong. Next month, I'm going to focus on one book at a time. Picking which to write  about is going tough, partially because I'm indecisive, but mostly because so many are great. But anyways, to finish off the month, here are my top villains for the eighth week of the New 52.

#1: Mary, Queen of Blood from I, Vampire #2

(Written by JOSHUA HALE FIALKOV, Art by ANDREA SORRENTINO, Cover by JENNY FRISON)

To say Mary is amazing for a villain would be unfair to her. She has some of the most wonderful depth I've ever read in any character.

Mary is, as one may expect from both her title and that of the book, a vampire. She isn't happy about her place in the world; hunted and loathed, vampires are most definitely second-class citizens in the DCU. Incredibly more powerful than humans, though, she feels it's the right of vampires to take over and slaughter us all. Unfortunately for her, Andrew Bennett, the vampire who turned her 400 years ago, feels humans have as much a right to live and is fine with the status quo.

What gives Mary such depth is that Andrew turned her because of their mutual love. A love so powerful that it still lives to this day. While Mary's army thinks of Andrew as nothing more than a traitor to their kind, Mary's personal war lies almost entirely with Andrew. She's fighting against him as much as she is anything else, but still marvels at him the same way she did on the day he turned her.

Mary, Queen of Blood is as central to this comic as its protagonist, without room for argument. A feat almost never accomplished by an antagonist. Absolutely the best villain in all of the New 52.

#2: Agent Fallon from Voodoo #2

(Written by RON MARZ, Art and cover by SAMI BASRI)

Jessica Fallon is not evil, insane, or in any way immediately distinguishable from an every day human. Agent Fallon works for the government and is tasked with taking down Voodoo. What makes her character great is that at first, this is just a mission. She has no emotional investment and just wants to get the job done. In order to complete her own mission, however, Voodoo makes it very personal. Agent Fallon reacts with a calm (and then not so calm) rage that is a delight to read.

Agent Fallon is an antagonist with whom one can totally sympathize, which is uncommon. Voodoo, due to the advantage her powers give her, is so far winning. I look forward to see what lengths she will go to beat Voodoo.

#3: Enchantress from Justice League Dark #2

(Written by PETER MILLIGAN, Art by MIKEL JANIN, Cover by RYAN SOOK)

Enchantress only makes it to the bottom of this list because she didn't make a big appearance in this issue, as it focused more on introducing new members of the team. She does, however, live up to her previous insanity. Through radios in cars, she terrorizes those acting against her with downright hateful, bone chilling, psychotic threats, and you just know she's going to keep her word.

In addition to the books listed above, awesome #2 issues from this week include Aquaman, The Flash, and Teen Titans. Especially The Flash. Really. Flash #2. Do whatever you can to read that comic.
