To the Editor:
I would like to take a few moments to congratulate Messrs. Cleary, Layne and McFall on their well-earned election to the Scotch Plains-Fanwood Board of Education, and all those who worked diligently to support a school budget that was both responsible and affordable.
As importantly, I would like to thank Messrs. Savoca, Root and DeVizio for their candidacies, because our whole democratic process rests on representation of a broad spectrum of community values; consensus comes out of an open debate of issues – it cannot be achieved by backroom dealing or judicial fiat.
To those of you who voted (and especially those of you who voted for me!), thank you for making your voice heard; it makes it less likely that you will be taken for granted going forward.
And finally, I would remind everyone that the full State Legislature is up for reelection this year. Our own district happens to be represented by Democrats (Scutari in the Senate, Stender and Green in the Assembly) but when it comes to reform of the drivers behind property taxes, support for the status quo is bipartisan. Whether Democrat or Republican, remind your representatives in the Assembly and Senate that you will be holding them accountable for what happens – or does not happen – between now and November.
Candidate, SPF BOE (Fanwood)
