Blotter: Chase Leads to Arrest in Scotch Plains

Police activity in the township March 14-19.

An early-morning vehicle- and foot-pursuit led to the arrest of a Plainfield man last Wednesday, March 16. According to the , Officer Stan Pearson tried to stop Shaleke Fisher, 33, at 2:30 a.m. for a motor vehicle violation on South Avenue, when Fisher allegedly fled at a high rate of speed. 

The chase did not last long: Fisher allegedly swiped a utility pole outside his house, exited his vehicle and attempted to run into his home when he was nabbed by the pursuing officers. He was transported to police headquarters, where he was processed and then turned over to the Union County Jail after he failed to post bail.

Monday, March 14:

  • Police arrested Bryant Jacobs, 20, of Plainfield, for possession of marijuana. Officers stopped Jacobs for a motor vehicle violation on Park Avenue and, after further investigation, discovered a quantity of marijuana in his possession. They transported Jacobs to police headquarters, where he was processed and released.

  • A student at a Plainfield Avenue school reported being a victim of theft. She stated that an unknown suspect or suspects removed cash from her pocketbook, which she had left in the classroom.
  • A student at the Union County Vocational Technical Schools reported being a victim of harassment. He stated that he has received several phone calls from a former friend, who then yells at him over the phone. 
  • The owner of a Beryllium Road business reported being a victim of fraud. He stated that a customer placed an order online in the amount of $1,400 and proceeded to pay for it with a fraudulent credit card number.
  • A resident of Westfield Road reported being a victim of fraud. He stated that an unknown suspect or suspects withdrew about $1,000 from his bank account without his authorization. He subsequently discovered that his ATM card is missing.

Wednesday, March 16:

  • A resident of Birch Street reported being a victim of fraud. She stated that she was told by the IRS that an unknown suspect or suspects filed an income tax return for her deceased huband. 

Thursday, March 17:

  • A resident of Raritan Road reported being a victim of fraud. He stated that an unknown suspect or suspects made charges on his credit card without his authorization.
  • The owner of a business on Route 22 reported being a victim of criminal mischief. He stated that sometime overnight, an unknown suspect or suspects damaged a dumpster on his property.

Saturday, March 19:

  • Police arrested Marc Purnell, 38, of Edison, for possession of marijuana. Officers stopped Purnell for a motor vehicle violation on Rahway Road and, after further investigation, discovered a quantity of marijuana. They transported him to police headquarters, where he was processed and released.
  • Police arrested Lamar Parkes, 19, of Farley Avenue in Scotch Plains, for possession of drug paraphernalia. Officers stopped Parkes for a motor vehicle violation on Park Avenue and, after further investigation, discovered the paraphernalia. They transported him to police headquarters, where he was processed and released.
