Blotter: Police Arrest FW Man After Hit-and-Run

The following arrest information was supplied by the Fanwood Police Department. It does not indicate a conviction.

The arrested James McCann, 54, for driving while intoxicated on Monday, June 6, according to the department's website.

At 9:28 p.m., officers responded to a reported hit-and-run in the 500-block of North Avenue. Shortly thereafter, officers spotted a car that matched the description of the suspect vehicle and performed a motor vehicle stop at Second Street and LaGrande Avenue. Upon speaking with the driver – McCann –the officers allegedly detected a strong odor of alcohol coming from the vehicle. After McCann failed several field sobriety tests, the officers placed him under arrest and transported him to police headquarters, where he was processed and released to a responsible person.

Residents Report Theft

A resident in the 200-block of South Avenue reported that sometime between Wednesday, June 1, and Thursday, June 2, an unknown suspect or suspects stole prescription medication from his residence. Neither the victim nor the officers could determine how entry was gained to the residence. The incident remains under investigation.

Two weeks later, police received a report that a bicycle had been stolen from the south side of the Fanwood Train Station. The bicycle, valued at $450, was allegedly locked and secured at the time of the incident. The theft is believed to have occurred sometime between 8 a.m. Wednesday, June 15, and 7:08 p.m. Thursday, June 16.

Police Investigate Burglaries

A resident of Cottage Way reported being a victim of burglary on Sunday, June 12. The resident stated that sometime between 8 p.m. June 11 and 1 p.m June 12, an unknown suspect or suspects smashed the driver-side window of his vehicle and removed a GPS unit. The device was valued at about $200. 

The following day, a resident of Paterson Road also reported that an unknown suspect or suspects had smashed the driver-side window of her vehicle and stolen a GPS unit, valued at about $130. The incident is believed to have occurred sometime between 8 p.m. June 12 and 5:15 a.m. June 13. 

Warrant Arrests

Police arrested James Lanter, 77, of Petersburg, Va., on Friday, June 10, for an outstanding warrant issued by the Clark court. At 8:55 a.m., officers stopped Lanter in the 30-block of Kempshall Terrace for a motor vehicle violation and discovered the warrant. They transported him to police headquarters, where he was processed and released.

On Monday, June 13, police arrested Luis Cordero, 33, of Elizabeth, outstanding warrants issued by the West Milford, Orange and Bloomfield courts. At 10:49 a.m., officers stopped Cordero on South Avenue for a motor vehicle violation and discovered the warrants. They transported him to police headquarters, where he was processed and turned over to the West Milford Police Department.

Two days later, police arrested Henry Ford, 52, of Plainfield, for an outstanding warrant issued by the Philadelphia, Pa., court. At 12:57 p.m., an officer performed a random license plate check on Ford's vehicle in the 100-block of South Avenue and discovered the warrant. Upon stopping the vehicle and confirming that Ford was driving, they placed him under arrest and transported him to police headquarters, where he was processed and released.

On Thursday, June 16, police arrested Lamont Bonds, 35, of Plainfield, for an outstanding warrant issued by the Newark court. At 4:33 p.m., officers stopped Bonds at Terrill Road and Cray Terrace for a motor vehicle violation and discovered the warrant. They transported him to police headquarters, where he was processed and released.

The next day, police arrested Joe Piverger, 24, of Union, for outstanding warrants issued by the Passaic and Union courts. At 8:30 p.m., officers stopped Piverger in the 100-block of South Avenue for a motor vehicle violation and discovered the warrant. They transported him to police headquarters, where he was processed and released.

On Saturday, June 18, police arrested Debra Roscoe, 20, of Plainfield, for an outstanding warrant issued by the Fanwood court. At 10:33 a.m., officers stopped Roscoe at South Avenue and Shady Lane for a motor vehicle violation and discovered the warrant. They transported her to police headquarters, where she was processed and released.
