Blotter: SP Man Arrested for Allegedly Trespassing on School Grounds

The following arrest information was supplied by the Scotch Plains Police Department. It does not indicate a conviction.

The arrested Jamel Sheppard, 22, of Johnson Street in Scotch Plains, for trespassing and obstruction of justice on Tuesday, June 7, according to a press release distributed by the department.

An officer on routine patrol observed Sheppard walking on the grounds of while school was in session, the press release states. The officer attempted to speak with Sheppard, who then allegedly refused to supply his name and attempted to flee. The officer quickly apprehended Sheppard and placed him under arrest. Sheppard was transported to police headquarters, where he was processed and released.

Avenel Man Arrested for Obstruction of Justice

Police arrested Shawn Mayerik, 34, of Avenel, for obstruction of justice Thursday, June 9. Officers responded to a Route 22 business on a report of a disturbance and, upon arriving, attempted to speak with Mayerik, who then allegedly yelled that he wouldn't talk to anybody and fled the scene. After a brief foot pursuit, he was arrested and transported to police headquarters, where he was processed and released.

Fanwood Resident Arrested for Marijuana Possession

Police arrested Kevin O'Leary, 18, of LaGrande Avenue in Fanwood, for possession of marijuana on Friday, June 10. O'Leary was driving his vehicle in the parking lot of Scotch Plains-Fanwood High School when he was stopped by officers. Following a brief investigation, the officers discovered a quantity of marijuana in O'Leary's vehicle. They placed him under arrest and transported him to police headquarters, where he was processed and released.

Business Owner Reports Burglary

A business owner on Route 22 reported being a victim of burglary Monday, June 6. He stated that sometime overnight, an unknown suspect or suspects entered his landscaping trailer and removed several pieces of equipment. The equipment was valued at about $2,600.

Residents Report Theft

A resident of Lake Avenue reported being a victim of theft on Friday, June 17. She stated that sometime overnight, an unknown suspect or suspects removed a decorative sign that hung from the front of her house. 

The following day, a resident of Hetfield Avenue reported  being a victim of theft. He stated that sometime overnight, an unknown suspect or suspects stole the rims from his vehicle, which was parked in his driveway.

Residents Report Fraud

A resident of Meadowview Road reported being a victim of fraud Wednesday, June 8. She stated that sometime over the last month, an unknown suspect or suspects made several thousand dollars in online purchases using her credit card without her authorization.

Five days later, a resident of Mountain Avenue reported being a victim of fraud. She stated that she received a call concerning a relative who was reportedly in trouble. The caller told the victim that she should send money to help. The victim sent about $300 in cash, then later learned that the call turned out to be a hoax.

Hit-and-Run Reported

A resident of Ternay Avenue reported being a victim of a hit-and-run Thursday, June 9. He stated that sometime overnight, an unknown suspect or suspects struck his vehicle, which was parked in the street, then fled the area. 

Resident, Business Owner Report Criminal Mischief

A resident of Algonquin Drive reported being a victim of criminal mischief on Tuesday, June 14. He stated that sometime overnight, an unknown suspect or suspects damaged his vehicle, which was parked in front of his house. 

Three days later, the owner of a business on East Second Street reported being a victim of criminal mischief. He stated that sometime overnight, an unknown suspect or suspects broke the windshield on his vehicle, which was parked in front of his house. 

Resident Reports Harassment

A resident of Plainfield Avenue reported being a victim of harassment Wednesday, June 15. He stated that a coworker yelled insults and obscenities at him after the two had a disagreement.

Warrant Arrests

Police arrested Leonard Madison, 20, of Plainfield, on Friday, June 10, for a $250 outstanding warrant issued by the Hillside court. Officers stopped Madison for a motor vehicle violation on Terrill Road and discovered the warrant. They transported him to police headquarters, where he was processed and released.

On Thursday, June 16, police arrested Lamont Stapleton, 22, of Rahway, for a $285 outstanding warrant issued by the Clark court. Officers stopped Stapleton for a motor vehicle violation on Terrill Road and discovered the warrant. They transported him to police headquarters, where he was processed and released.

The next day, police arrested Santos LaSalle, 36, of Newark, for a $450 outstanding warrant issued by the Jersey City court. Officers stopped LaSalle for a motor vehicle violation on Route 22 and discovered the warrant. They transported him to police headquarters, where he was processed and released.

On Saturday, June 18, police arrested Anthony Lymon, 23, of Irvington, for a $289 outstanding warrant issued by the Scotch Plains court. Officers stopped Lymon for a motor vehicle violation and discovered the warrant. They transported him to police headquarters, where he was processed and released.

The following day, police arrested Jose Ortiz, 33, of Hazlet, for a no-bail warrant issued by the Union County court. Officers stopped Ortiz for a motor vehicle violation on Raritan Road and discovered the warrant. They transported him to police headquarters, where he was processed and released.
