FBI: TD Bank Robbery Linked to Incident at Hackensack Bank

Police activity in Scotch Plains from Jan. 31 through Feb. 6.

The FBI believes that at Park Avenue and South Avenue in Scotch Plains on Sunday morning later hit a branch of PNC Bank in Hackensack on Friday afternoon, according to a report on NorthJersey.com, the website for The Bergen Record.  

In each incident, an unidentified male – described as white or Hispanic, about 5-feet-4-inches, with a beard and wearing a plaid coat, sunglasses and knit cap – passed a note to a bank teller demanding money, then fled with an undetermined amount of cash. The suspect did not show a weapon in either robbery, and no one was reported injured.

Monday, Jan. 31:

  • A Route 22 business owner told the that she was the victim of fraud. She stated that two suspects came into her store and tried to make a purchase with a counterfeit $100 bill. When she asked them about bill, they ran of the store.  

Thursday, Feb. 3:

  • A resident of Old Farm Road reported being a victim of fraud. She stated that she received a phone call from a suspect who stated that he represented a company, and that the resident needed to pay a back-fine or would be arrested. The resident reported that she wired about $3,000 to the suspect.
  • A resident of Spruce Mill Lane reported being a victim of harassment. She stated that she has had a problem with a neighbor and that he left a note on her car's windshield. 

Saturday, Feb. 5:

  • Police arrested Jamilah Elam, 19, of Irvington, for possession of marijuana. Officers stopped Elam for a motor vehicle violation on Route 22 and, while speaking with her, observed the marijuana. They placed her under arrest and transported her to police headquarters, where she was processed and released.
  • Police arrested Aaron McConnaughey, 31, of Plainfield, for possession of marijuana. Officers stopped McConnaughey for a motor vehicle violation on Front Street and, while speaking with him, observed the marijuana. They placed him under arrest and transported him to police headquarters, where he was processed and released. 

Sunday, Feb. 6:

  • Police arrested Rui Loureiro, 27, of Hillside, for driving while intoxicated. Officers stopped Loureiro for a motor vehicle violation on Route 22 and, while speaking with him, smelled the odor of alcohol. They administered several field sobriety tests, which Loureiro subsequently failed, placed him under arrest, and transported him to police headquarters, where he was processed and released. 
  • Police arrested Alfred Stembridge, 55, of Plainfield, for driving while intoxicated. Officers stopped Stembridge for a motor vehicle violation on Route 22 and smelled the odor of alcohol. They administered several field sobriety tests, which Stembridge subsequently failed, placed him under arrest, and transported him to police headquarters, where he was processed and released.
