Firefighters Clear Hydrants of Snow

Doing so will make them easier to locate in the event of an emergency.

Members of the Fanwood Volunteer Fire Department spent Saturday morning digging the borough's hydrants out of the snow.

Heavy snowfall often covers hydrants, making them inaccessible during times of need. Saturday's crew, which included Fanwood chief Dave Clausen, his 10-year-old son Dante Clausen, firefighters Kris Piccola and Brandon Sterns, and Capt. Steve Szanto, cleared about 20 hydrants in the borough. They were also lucky to find that many homeowners had already done the work for them.

The department reminds residents to take a few extra minutes to 'adopt' your nearest fire hydrant by clearing the snow from around the hydrant. This improves the firefighter's ability to quickly locate and access the hydrant in the event of an emergency.
