A former Rutgers University student who was found dead in a New Brunswick backyard earlier this month was the victim of a homicide, according to the Middlesex County Prosecutor's Office.

William R. McCaw, a 22-year-old Kean University student found dead after he apparently had been fatally beaten, was the victim of blunt force trauma, according to Middlesex County Acting Prosecutor Andrew C. Carey.

"The Middlesex County Prosecutor's Office extends its sincere sympathy to the family and friends of William McCaw," Carey said in a statement. "We, along with the New Brunswick Police Department, will continue to aggressively pursue our investigation. We urge anyone with information to do the right thing, and come forward."

McCaw, a native of Hillsborough whose family later moved to Gallatin, Tenn., was found outside a home on Hartwell Street after an unidentified neighbor called police on Feb. 15 at 10:26 a.m., according to Carey and Anthony A. Caputo, director of the New Brunswick Police Department.

Patch will update this story as more information becomes available.

Someone had a beef with this kid or saw this happen. Anyone who knows something needs to come forward. This is a shame. Need more details about who he was with, etc. Are there circumstances connected to this? Was he out drinking with people? Who did he go out with that day/night? There must be some chain of events that led up to this and someone out there who knows who did this. Feel so bad for this family.

This is so tragic. My heart truly goes out to his family. I hope whoever did this is brought to justice and soon.

I bet there is more to the story, however, no one deserves death in that manner. RIP and I, too, hope they find the person or persons who did this to him.

While I sympathize for the grieving family of this victim, I do not understand why the author has titled the article "Former Rutgers student death ruled homicide" when he is currently a KEAN University student??? What is the purpose of pointing out he is a former Rutgers U student???

Because they just followed the crowd with the headline as all the news channels had as well. Dumb.
Joey Joe February 24, 2014 at 09:38 PM
Surprised they didn't say - "Former newborn ................." Can't wait what they'll write about me someday... I can see it now.... "Former USMC Lance Corporal, Vietnam Vet with 45 year old shrapnel in shoulder cracks head on lift gate of his SUV due to faulty lift cylinder, receives stitches.....Proclaims self as Dumb ass" after incident."

The headline is not important. For 3 1/2 years he was a Rutgers student. By all accounts it seems that he really loved the university. For reasons unknown to me, he transferred to Kean this semester. It does not matter where he was currently enrolled. Your comment is insensitive and implies that the headline somehow tarnishes Rutgers reputation. Rutgers maybe needs step up and do a better job of keeping their off campus population safe. Let's rethink what is actually a "dumb" comment. RIP Billy I wish I had the chance to know you better.

Unless Rutgers played a role in his death, there's no need to point out that he went there, as it's simply not relevant. I'm sure he also attended a high school, and at some point, an elementary school, but neither of them are named in the headline. Rutgers also has NO need to keep their off campus population safe, there are police departments paid to do that. What, are they supposed to follow everyone around, even when they're no longer enrolled, to keep an eye on them? Talk about "dumb" comments...

What was he doing in that yard prior to his death? Is this a "bad" part of town? These are the important questions, not which school he attended.
Gerri Hopkins February 25, 2014 at 07:44 AM
Because of his past ties to Rutgers is what brought him to New Brunswick. This is an ongoing investigation, thus police our not releasing details of the investigation. Give them a chance to do their job. They may have a suspect, but not enough evidence to arrest the person (s) responsible.

Sir, what a cynical, cynical post. You should be ashamed about using a young man's death to make a tired and trite political statement.
SP Resident February 25, 2014 at 09:30 AM
This young man was a friend of my son and by all accounts was a nice guy. He transferred to Kean in January 2014 and had attended Rutgers consistently from 2010 until 2014. He was instrumental in starting a charter of a new fraternity at Rutgers, an avid Rutgers sports fan and absolutely loved the school. His being murdered a few blocks from campus and his connections to Rutgers makes his attendance there relevant but certainly not the most important issue. Billy McCaw was murdered! New Brunswick is a city and most of the area surrounding Rutgers is "bad". Crime (robbery, muggings, stabbings, etc.) on and around campus is an everyday occurrence and the crime alerts are sent to the student population. It is the responsibility of the New Brunswick police to prevent and investigate crime that takes place "off campus", but the murder of this young man affects everyone at RU. What was he doing in the yard? Having the life beat out of him, probably trying to get away from whoever did this to him. The bottom line is this is a 22 year old man who went down to New Brunswick to visit his friends and wound up murdered. Someone had to have seen or heard something and I pray the police continue to put pressure on those in the area where he was found. For the sake of his family & friends I pray that the investigation leads to the arrest of whoever killed Billy McCaw. I am heartsick for his family.
Sir February 25, 2014 at 10:04 AM
The death of Billy McGraw is tragic. It will lead to the same element who killed the person at Short Hills Mall. Thugs who prey on others.
Andy Pat February 25, 2014 at 11:15 AM
Sir-why would you make such a racist statement when YOU have no facts or evidence to support ?? Your thinly veiled references to "same element as" and "thug" is what gives away your blind adherence to the "dog whistle" phrases that now plague the conservative right.
John Cobb February 25, 2014 at 11:42 AM
But Andy Pat, maybe he's right and this was a thug killing. Watch Action News ch6 from Philly and see all the surveilence videos they show of thugs attacking people with extreme violence.
Sir February 25, 2014 at 11:50 AM
@ Andy pat, not cool to play the racist card, although the left is great at that. If you want clarification, my reference to "element" suggests the murder(s) are likely unemployed or under employed, they come from single parents, they are probably drop outs and have some form of a prior criminal record. Whether they are white, black, hispanic, asian, etc will be determined when they are apprehended and convicted. You are the one who brought race into the conversation. I'll accept your apology.
Marynary February 25, 2014 at 12:17 PM
Lets leave it at William R. McCaw was a white victim of a violent murder for now. Will it be OK, Sir, if after the killer is caught or described if we make note of that? That seems pretty fair to me.
Revolution February 26, 2014 at 01:15 PM
Did the police say why Mr. McCaw was in there area?
