Mayor DePaola Advises Residents to Prepare for Hurricane Sandy

The Mayor sent out the following message on best practices in preparing for the storm.

The following was provided by the Township of Scotch Plains' Mayor, Mary DePaola.

As we brace for Hurricane Sandy, the Township would like to remind everyone to use extreme caution during this serious and potentially dangerous storm. Heavy rains and strong winds are expected and flooding is possible. Please remember to take steps to secure your property and ensure the safety of your families.

-                  Check your flashlights and have extra batteries.

-                  Keep your cell phone fully charged.

-                  Keep a supply of water and non–perishable food.

-                  Have a list of emergency numbers ready.

-                  One week supply of your medications.

For additional information, residents can log on to the Township Website, www.scotchplainsnj.com  or the State OEM web site at www.ready.nj.gov  for preparedness information and related updates.

Residents should have enough water and food on hand in the event of lengthy power outages.  If you see any downed wires, do not approach; contact the Scotch Plains Police Department.  Please only use 911 for emergencies, all other police calls use 322-7100.  SPPD will have additional officers on duty to handle any potential problems.

If evacuations should become necessary, SPPD will activate the instant alert system as well as make an announcement on SP-TV and on the Township Website.

As always, thank you for your time and assistance.  Stay safe!

My neighbors are preparing by blowing their leaves in to the street to ensure we get a swimming pool this week by blocking the storm drains!

Did Scotch Plains really prepare for the storm by cutting down all the trees around the municipal building? Goodbye tree lined street, hello high speed roadway. Or was the tree removal needed to move the recently refurbished Muni building down the street the Shackamaxon property? I do not think SP’s town hall will make in over the Fanwood bridge. But if the building is moved and gets stuck in Fanwood we would have instant consolidation. Brilliant plan!

Lenapee Tree you of all should know the trees were effectively eaten from the inside by a certain type of beatle, pretty smart thinkin' by the town to get rid of potentially dangerous trees that could cause severe damadge during the onslaught of Hurricane Sandy don't ya think? You keep tryin' to sling that mud baby during a potentially deadly storm. Shows what kind of people your side really are.

I'm Holden MaGroin and I was going to take a break for the storm, but sometimes they're just served up on a tee. Would that certain type of beatle be Paul or Ringo? I'm unfamiliar with a BEETLE you're talking about that caused the downtown haircut. Buts that's ok, based on the Sunday paper and the literature dropped in my mailbox a couple of weeks ago, you'll have plenty to rant about when we're dry again. In all sincerity, I hope you make it safely through the storm, and we can speak/argue in a few days.

No political party was mentioned in my absurd comments. It is most likely coincidence the destruction of trees was limited to a beautiful public area that has been chosen to be developed. And coincidence it needed the trees removed as a first step. Do you remember what type of tree was removed? And what type of insect was involved? Does that bug eat that tree? I have never mentioned or endorsed a political party in my comments. Would you explain how my comment was political and which party it endorsed?
