NJ American Water Reports Water Main Break in Fanwood

There is a six inch water main break at Beech Avenue and Klaniecki Plance in Fanwood.

New Jersey American Water Company has reported that a water main break occurred early this morning at Beech Avenue and Klaniecki Place in Fanwood. Media Representative for the NJ American Water, Richard Barnes stated that crews are on the scene and the break should be fixed in about four hours. In the meantime, residents in the area may experience a discoloration in water or reduced water pressure.

Barnes stated that while the cause of the six inch water break is currently undetermined, it was most likely the result of two common causes of this occurrence.

“Around this time of year, we see an increase in main breaks due the freezing/thaw environment of the ground that can cause the pipes underground to shift, resulting in cracks to the infrastructure,” he said.

Barnes also stated that one of the problems NJ American Water continues to struggle with is the aging of the infrastructure. He explained that because “many of the pipes are 40, 50, and 60 years old,” cracks begin to appear causing similar water main breaks.

If you live in the area of the break and notice that your water is discolored, alert NJ American Water and follow these tips given by the Company.

  • If you experience discolored water, simply run the cold water for 15 to 20 minutes until it clear after the repairs are completed.
  • Check for discolored water before using the washing machine or dishwasher. Wait until the water runs clear at the tap before doing laundry or running the dishwasher.
  • If your laundry becomes stained, DO NOT PUT YOUR LAUNDRY IN THE DRYER. Rewash clothes immediately using detergent and add a rust remover. Most rust removers can also be used on stained fixtures.
  • If water pressure or water volume seems low after flushing has been completed, check your faucet screens for trapped particles.
