Police Investigate Springfield Armed Robbery

A man sticks up a Morris Avenue gas station.

The gas station attendant did not even have to time to ask “cash or credit” before the driver drew his gun, judging from a report filed by Springfield police officers.

At 8:41 p.m. Monday, a white 4-door Jeep Cherokee pulled into the  at the intersection of Morris Avenue and Meisel Avenue and parked by the pumps. When the gas station attendant removed the car’s gas cap, the driver allegedly stuck a handgun in the attendant's stomach and demanded money, the police report states.

The attendant complied, handing all the money he had to the suspect, whom police describe as a heavyset, bearded black male, apparently 30 to 40 years old, and standing between 5-feet-7-inches and 5-feet-9-inches. The suspect reportedly searched the victim’s pockets for additional money while warning “don’t look at me.”

The attendant was not injured.

The suspect then fled in his Jeep across Morris Avenue onto Springfield Avenue, into the Vauxhall section of Union. A similar armed robbery was also committed at the BP station in Union that night. Detectives are looking into whether the robberies were committed by the same man.
