Police Investigating Alleged Homicide in Cranford

Warren resident Pamela Schmidt, 22, suffered traumatic injuries, prosecutor says.

Police are investigating the apparent homicide of a 22-year-old Warren woman on Sunday in Cranford, the Union County Prosecutor's Office announced in a press release Monday morning.

Officers were called to a residence on Greaves Place in Cranford shortly after noon on Sunday, where they discovered the victim, Pamela Schmidt, 22, unresponsive in a room in the home's basement, prosecutor Theodore J. Romankow said in the press release. She was later pronounced dead at the scene.

An autopsy by the county medical examiner determined that Schmidt suffered traumatic injuries. Romankow stated that her death was subsequently ruled a homicide.

The Union County Prosecutor's Office Homicide Task Force and the Cranford Police Department are leading the investigation. They have determined a "person of interest" in connection with the homicide, the press release stated, but no charges had been filed as of Monday morning.

"This remains an active investigation, but local residents should not feel they are in danger," Romankow said in the release. "This appears to be a tragic isolated incident."
