Fire Breaks Out in Roof of Scotchwood Diner Prior to Hurricane Sandy
On Oct. 29, a fire broke out in the the front portion of the roof of the Scotchwood Diner.
Before Hurricane Sandy fully hit New Jersey, the winds associated with the storm created a brief fire at the Scotcwood Diner on U.S. Highway 22 in Scotch Plains.
On Monday, Oct. 29 at approximately 7:35 a.m. a fire broke out on the roof in front of the Scotchwood Diner.
According to Scotch Plains Fire Chief, Jonathan Ellis, the fire broke out from high winds which caused the metal flashing to come loose and short out the neon sign.
The Scotch Plains Fire Department(SPFD) knocked out the fire in about 15 minutes, Ellis said.
Due to the high winds that were hitting Scotch Plains from Hurricane Sandy's wrath, the department had to use the Tower Ladder because the usual ground ladders were blown over in the winds.
The SPFD isolated the electric circuit and the diner was able to re-open.
