An unidentified male pedestrian was killed at approximately 9 p.m. tonight when he was struck by a motorist driving east on Route 22 in Scotch Plains.
Scotch Plains Police Captain Brian Donnelly called the incident a “tragic accident”. The crash occurred at Route 22 East and Harding Road across from Grillestone restaurant. The victim has not been identified, pending notification of family.
Donnelly stated that the motorist, who was not under the influence of any drugs or alcohol, stopped after striking the victim and spoke with police at the scene. The traffic bureau scene reconstructed the accident for review immediately after the crash.
As police stood guard over the body, which lay covered by a sheet, a Harding Road resident described the events immediately following the Police’s arrival at the scene.
“We didn’t hear a thing,” the resident said. “My son was pulling out of the driveway to go to the gym when he saw a few police cars pull in front of the street and the body lying on the road. He said, dad, I think he’s dead.”
At approximately 9:30 p.m., traffic on Route 22 was backed up as far as the Scotchwood Diner and was also spilling out onto the side streets near the accident, including Harding Road and Mountainview Avenue, as drivers attempted to navigate around the scene. The road will remain blocked off a few yards before the scene as Police continue the investigation.
Police will continue to investigate the accident and are currently interviewing witnesses. If you or someone you know witnessed the accident, call the SPPD at (908) 322-7100.
