Scotch Plains-Fanwood Year in Review: Police and Fire Events of 2012 (Part Two)

A look at the biggest police and fire events in Scotch Plains and Fanwood for the year 2012. This is the second part of a two part story.

September 5, 2012 – Car Strikes Bicyclist at Intersection of South Ave. and La Grande Ave.

A 63-year-old bicyclist, Jose G. Grosso, from Rahway was struck by a car at the intersection of South Ave. and La Grande Ave. in Fanwood at 4:19 p.m. on Aug 31. The driver of the car is a 75-year-old Fanwood resident. Grosso suffered numerous injuries and was transported to UMDNJ with non-life threatening injuries.

September 10, 2012 – Scotch Plains Firefighter Leaves for Third Tour with U.S. Marines

On Friday evening the Scotch Plains Fire Department held a going away party for one of their own, Joe Rodrigues, a Major in the U.S. Marine Corps.

 Rodrigues, a volunteer Firefighter in Scotch Plains since 2007, will be leaving for six months to conduct Theatre Security Cooperation in a region of Africa, this will be his third tour in the Marines.

 

October 10, 2012 –

On September 28, 2012 at approximately 2:00 PM, Seng Couture on South Avenue reported that a $ 5,000.00 wedding dress was taken by a white female in her 30's wearing a red or pink colored dress.

November 13, 2012 – Scotch Plains Officer Injured While Leading a Resident to Safety During Sandy

During the height of Sandy Officer Joseph Citarella walked a Hoe Avenue resident back insider her home, but on his way back to the police vehicle, the winds began to pick up and the officer was struck off of his feet.

 A large branch smacked Citarella in the back of the head and he fell to the ground. He was able to contact to the department via his radio and an ambulance was sent to the scene to bring Citarella to the emergency room at Overlook Hospital. He was later released but then readmitted with a concussion two days later. He was again released and then able to recover at home.

December 13, 2012 – Aviation Fuel Mistakenly Delivered to SP Lukoil


The New Jersey Division of Consumer Affairs today confirmed that approximately eight tankers of aviation fuel were mistakenly delivered to six gas stations, including the Scotch Plains Lukoil between Dec. 5 and Dec. 7 in four New Jersey counties; this fuel was sold to motorists last week before the stations were shut down.

December 14, 2012 – Pedestrian Struck Near Fanwood Train Station

A pedestrian was struck by a vehicle near the Fanwood Train Station on Friday morning. 

According to Fanwood Police Chief Richard Trigo, the accident occurred at 6:41 a.m. at Sheelan's Crossing and South Avenue in Fanwood. The pedestrian suffered non-life threatening injuries.


December 17, 2012 – SPF Superintendent Dr. Margaret Hayes Releases Statement Following Newtown Shooting

Following the horror of the Newtown Connecticut Shooting, Superintendent of the Scotch Plains-Fanwood School District released, Dr. Margaret Hayes released a statement on the shooting. She provided parents and students with the option for counseling and how to deal with the emotions following such a tragedy.


December 17, 2012 –

A man grabbed the purse of a 62-year-old woman in the CVS parking lot on Dec. 16, after the woman refused to give up her bag the man dragged her three parking spaces before letting go.

December 19, 2012 – Deaths of Mother and Child in Church Avenue Fire Ruled Homicide/Suicide

The deaths of a 32-year-old woman and her three-year-old son in a Scotch Plains house fire on Tuesday evening have been ruled a homicide/suicide by the Scotch Plains Police Department along with the Union County Homicide Task Force, after an investigation revealed rags doused with an accelerant were blocking the door to a bedroom.


December 20, 2012 – Fanwood Wedding Dress Thief Arrested

The Fanwood Police Department made an arrest on Dec. 11 involving the theft of a stolen wedding dress from Seng Couture Bridal Shop in Fanwood, New Jersey that occurred on Sept. 28. 

Brigid Hanrahan, 40, of Piscataway was positively identified as the person captured on the videotape exiting the shop with the stolen merchandise.
