Scotch Plains Police Reports: Feb. 1 to 5

Police activity from the past week.

Scotch Plains Police recently arrested two Jersey City men for shoplifting at a Route 22 store.

Police received a call from the manager of the store on Feb. 5 reporting that two men in the store were shoplifting merchandise. When they arrived, cops discovered Daniel Martinez, 39, and Ramon Cotto, 41, both of Jersey City, had several items in their possession and in their vehicle.

They were transported to police headquarters, where they were processed and released after posting bail.

Here's a look at the rest of the recent police activity in Scotch Plains.

Monday, Feb. 1:

  • Bilal Jones, 19, of Plainfield, was arrested for possession of marijuana. He was stopped by police for a motor vehicle violation when they smelled the odor of marijuana, which they later found in his jacket. Jones was transported to police headquarters, where he was processed and released.

Tuesday, Feb. 2:

  • Kendall Bartley, 29, of Willingboro, was arrested for an outstanding warrant after a stop for a motor vehicle violation. He was transported to police headquarters, where he was processed and released.

Wednesday, Feb. 3:

  • Ward Seymore, 54, of North Plainfield, was arrested for an outstanding warrant after a stop for a motor vehicle violation. He was transported to police headquarters, where he was processed and released.
  • The manager of a Westfield Avenue business reported being a victim of fraud. The manager told police that an unknown suspect fraudulently issued a company check to a third party and then cashed it. The check was in the amount of $843.
  • An employee of a Front Street business reported being a victim of theft. The employee told police that an unknown suspect removed copper wire from his yard, which was valued at approximately $60.
  • A resident of Greenbrier Lane reported being a victim of fraud. The man told police that an unknown suspect opened a credit card account without his authorization. They have charged approximately $2,300 to the account.

Thursday, Feb. 4:

  • The owner of a Route 22 business reported being a victim of harassment. The owner told police that the owner of a competing business calls him on several occasions and yells obscenities at him.
