SP Police Investigating Armed Robbery on Route 22

The incident occurred around 8:40 p.m. Sunday.

Scotch Plains police are searching for four suspects who are wanted for hitting a local gas attendant over the head Sunday night and stealing several hundred dollars in cash.

The incident occurred at approximately 8:40 p.m., when a green or gray 4-door SUV pulled up to the Delta Gas Station on Route 22 West in Scotch Plains. When the gas attendant approached the vehicle, the individuals got out. One put something up against his back, while the other struck him over the head with an object.

The suspects then stole several hundred dollars in cash from the attendant's pockets before driving off.

Scotch Plains Rescue Squad responded to the scene and transported the attendant to University Hospital in Newark, where he was treated for the laceration to his head.

Lt. Brian Donnelly of the Scotch Plains Police Department said investigators are currently looking at different leads and have put the information out there to other departments. While the gas station did not have video cameras installed on its premises, Donnelly said investigators will be looking at video at other places in the area.

"We take this matter very seriously," Donnelly said. "A hard-working attendant at a gas station comes out to help customers and ends up getting struck in the face. Thankfully the individual, although he suffered an injury, it was nothing life-threatening."
