Woman Injured When Car Strikes Tree on Midway Avenue

Midway Avenue was closed this morning after a Roselle woman drifted into the westbound lane, crashing her car into a tree.

A 30-year-old female, of Roselle, sustained serious injuries when she crashed her car into a tree at 10:12 a.m. on Midway Avenue in Fanwood. The cause of the accident is still unknown.

Chief Richard Trigo stated that witnesses observed the victim traveling east on Midway Avenue in a 2008 Honda CRV when her vehicle crossed over into the westbound lane and struck a tree.  The victim became trapped inside the vehicle, sustaining injuries to her face, chest, and right foot. The Fanwood Fire Department used the Jaws of Life to rescue the victim from the vehicle.  She was transported to Robert Wood Johnson Hospital and is currently being evaluated for non-life threatening injuries.

No other pedestrians or vehicles were involved in the accident. Chief Trigo described that witnesses stated drivers traveling west on Midway Avenue were able to safely move out of the way before the victim’s vehicle struck the tree.

Fanwood Police contacted Union County Hazmat services to clean up gasoline and other fluids that had leaked onto the roadway. Midway Avenue, between Russell Road and Martine Avenue, remained closed for approximately 40 minutes after the accident. Fanwood resident, Thomas Gordon, witnessed the aftermath of the crash.

“I live on Russell Road. I heard a huge crash and immediately knew it must be an accident. I heard the sirens and I could see that Midway Avenue was closed from outside my kitchen window,” Gordon said. “I arrived at the scene of the accident about 8 minutes after the crash. It took about another 5 minutes for the Fire Department to get her out of the vehicle. She was moving her feet and speaking with the Fire Squad members and Police. She handed her phone to another driver who had called 911 and asked him to call her fiancé… thank god there were no other cars involved.”
