Assemblywoman Stender Attends Mayors' Gun Control Conference in Cranford

Stender joins mayors in urging congress to introduce new legislation on guns.

The following information was provided by the office of Assemblywoman Linda Stender.

Yesterday, Assemblywoman Stender joined the mayors of the bipartisan, Mayors Against Illegal Guns Coalition, to urge Congress to take action on banning assault weapons throughout the nation.   The coalition is challenging Congress for a steadfast solution to take military style weapons out of the hands of criminals.

“In light of the tragedies we have witnessed in the past year, it is time that Congress step up and enact new legislation," said Stender.  “To not take action at this crucial time would be foolish. By reducing access and adding tougher background checks, law enforcement officials will be better able to keep these highly dangerous weapons away from criminals and prevent mass shootings.”

The coalition is introducing a new media campaign as well as heading to Washington on Wednesday to meet with federal lawmakers.  “I am proud to see our hardworking Mayors taking action on such a significant issue,” added Stender.  “I am confident their enthusiasm will help create a resolution for the future.”

Assemblywoman Linda Stender currently has legislation in the Assembly working against gun violence.  She recently introduced a resolution urging the President and Congress to reauthorize the assault weapons ban.   This bill further urges New Jersey’s Congressional delegation to work diligently to achieve the enactment of this legislation.

Also, Stender recently introduced A3687 which disqualifies a person named on a federal Terrorist Watchlist from obtaining firearms, identification cards or permits to purchase a handgun.  And bill A1216 which upgrades the penalties of a person entering school property with an assault weapon.
