Brief: Borough Breaks Ground for 'Fanwood Crossing'

Elite Properties, of Warren, prepares to construct a Victorian-style mixed-use structure at the corner of Martine Avenue and South Avenue.

Fanwood Mayor Colleen Mahr and Elite Properties, of Warren, held a ground-breaking ceremony Wednesday morning for what's been heralded as the next step in the borough's downtown redevelopment: a three-story mixed-use building at the corner of Martine Avenue and South Avenue, built in a vibrant Victorian style to match the Fanwood Train Station.

“Today with one shovel in the ground, we will take a giant leap forward with our efforts of bringing to you a vibrant downtown where people will live, work and spend time with their family and friends,” Mahr said.

The building, named "Fanwood Crossing," will feature retail space on the first floor, apartment complexes on the upper levels, elevator service and other amenities. If the properties are filled and prove successful, the building could inject millions of dollars into the local economy, Mahr stated.

Assemblywoman and former Fanwood Mayor Linda Stender (D-Scotch Plains) was also on hand to celebrate the groundbreaking.

“I had a headquarters here for a while and the building was really in bad shape then,” Stender said. “So knowing that this time it will bring new life to this community is fabulous.”

Once construction begins, the project is expected to be completed within 12 to 18 months, Mahr said.

It always surprises me that those who are so quick to judge generally have such extraordinary narrow vision and don't see the big picture. This isn't some "Magic Lamp" where we simply rub our train station and wish for good successful businesses to come into our town. Its a long, exhausting and financially challenging commitment to attract businesses to come to Fanwood and provide them all the advantages that will make them a success. This is the point of the entire Downtown Redevelopment. You can snub your noses at the services or industries that are filling these commercial properties, but as a businessman and a resident its more important that they are thriving and profitable. Of course we want diversity in the establishments that open up shop, but before any of this could happen, someone had to make the decision to take on the challenge to make Fanwood more inviting structurally. The fact is, this ground breaking is probably the most important one of the many that Fanwood has had under this Mayors administration, and for the very purpose of marketing downtown Fanwood. Eventually when people come off the train, in years to come, it will be what develops out of this ground breaking that will welcome them into Fanwood.

Personally, I'm excited to see what businesses come into the Crossing. I see this project akin to what Garwood has done, especially along South Avenue with Rosie's wine bar, etc. I would like to see a restaurant of some type come in, or maybe a bigger Flannery's, I think that place has been such an added plus. It's tough to decide what businesses to pursue or how to woo them and I don't know the first thing about it. I'd like to see some sort of popular retail store or two (like in Westfild with Gap, Lucky, Coach, Williams-Sonoma). However, I think it'd also be an ideal location for some small business as well.

Is their any financial disclosures on the cost to the Borough as sponsor of this project i.e. costs and ROI ?

Why would a clothing store want to locate in Fanwood at present? Nice place. Great Borough. But not nearly enough foot traffic downtown and dead after sunset. If we get a few restaurants, and then maybe some other type of destination open at night to draw some people ... maybe then. Until then a retailer, especially clothing will pick Westfield every time, even with much higher rents. We're lucky the Bath Connection store is there now - I wish we had some other unique stores to make it a more interesting town.

Well said.

I agree, we definitely need restaurants. I'm a former New Yorker and We love eating out. I'm tired of giving my money to Westfield and would love to keep it local to my town.

I know this would cause a traffic nightmare, but I would love to see a small two screen cinema. Then people would have a reason to come/stay in town for entertainments, and hang out for a bite to eat or stroll around and shop, too.

I'm excited to see this development. It should give Fanwood the upscale look and added vibrance it deserves. Especially since we pay higher property taxes in this town than Westfield, we deserve it! I'm hoping for resturants, a good coffee shop/deli or Starbucks. I also would like to see a small movie theater.
