Christie Surpasses Corzine in Scotch Plains Campaign Donations

Chris Christie’s election win in Scotch Plains can be counted in more than just votes. The Republican governor-elect also garnered the most campaign finance donations from local residents.

An analysis of recently-released data from the state Election Law Enforcement Commission shows that Christie raised more than $10,000 in Scotch Plains, compared to just $2,650 for Democrat Jon Corzine and $25 for Independent Chris Daggett.

All of Corzine’s donations came from 15 individual residents in the amount of $300 or less. Notable donors included Board of Education member Betty Anne Woerner ($100); former mayor Geri Samuel ($50); former NJ Division of Consumer Affairs Director Reni Erdos ($150); and long-time DNC member June Fischer ($150).

In contrast, 23 Scotch Plains residents gave to the Christie campaign, some donating funds topping $1,000.

Christie’s top contributors included Amartej Singh Suri, an employee of Gooddell on U.S. Route 22 ($1,000), and Edward Welsh, the owner of Arco Electrical Corp ($1,000). Next up was a $700 contribution from Llewellyn Jones, a partner at QTrade Capital Partners in New York, and eight $500 donations from other residents. Other amounts donated ranged from $25 to $300.

Independent Candidate Chris Daggett only received one donation from a Scotch Plains resident. Robert J. Graul, a salesperson at Wal-Mart, gave $25 to the Daggett campaign in October.
