Letter: SP's New Manager Introduces Himself to Town

Christopher Marion started his new job in Scotch Plains on June 29.

After months of going without an official town manager, Scotch Plains welcomed Christopher Marion into the position on June 29. Marion, who was previously the business administrator in West Windsor, submitted this letter to Scotch Plains-Fanwood Patch to introduce himself to the town.

Letter:

I would like to take this opportunity to briefly introduce myself and express my appreciation for the warm welcome given to me as the new municipal manager for the Township of Scotch Plains.

In Scotch Plains, the municipal manager is appointed by the mayor and council to implement the policies of the governing body and oversee the day-to-day operations of township government. Specific responsibilities associated with this position include preparing the annual operating and capital budgets, personnel, purchasing, insurance administration and working directly with departments on the delivery of a wide range of municipal services.

My first two weeks in the township can definitely be described as a "whirlwind of activity." I officially moved into my office, held initial meetings with department heads, met a number of employees, residents and volunteers, toured various municipal facilities and attended several meetings and events. Interestingly enough, the two most common questions that people have asked me so far are:  How do you like Scotch Plains?  (Answer: I love it!) and Are you seriously a Philadelphia Phillies Fan?  (Answer: You know it!)

Now that the summer season is in full swing, this municipal manager is looking forward to a number of exciting events including the Summer Block Party tonight (sponsored by the Scotch Plains Cultural Arts Committee), the opening of the Farmers Market on Saturday (sponsored by the Scotch Plains Business and Professional Association) and the 2009 Village Green Summer Concert Series (also sponsored by the Scotch Plains Cultural Arts Committee). There is really something going on in town for everyone to enjoy, and I strongly encourage residents to visit the above links, as well as the Scotch Plains Management Corporation, Township of Scotch Plains and Scotch Plains-Fanwood Patch Web sites for upcoming event-related information.

Thanks again to everyone for the kind reception. I will see you around town!

Christopher R. Marion
Municipal Manager
