Mayor Wins 'Most Nutritious' in Cook-off

The event was meant to encourage mayors to spread the word of healthy living back home.

Despite initial worries that her recipe wasn't healthy enough, Scotch Plains Mayor Nancy Malool's dish of "roast pork with apple and fennel" won the title of "most nutritious" in the "Mayors' Healthy Cook-off" on Wednesday evening.

The cook-off, sponsored by the New Jersey State League of Municipalities, along with the New Jersey Health Care Quality Institute, put four Central New Jersey mayors to the test of cooking a healthy recipe in under two hours.

The event is held every year as a way for the Mayors Wellness Campaign to encourage mayors to take the message of healthy living back to their hometowns. This year, it was held at the Wegmans Supermarket in Woodbridge.

To be fair, every mayor who competed in the event won a title.

North Brunswick Mayor Francis "Mac" Womack won "Best Presentation” for her Cajun alligator recipe. Woodbridge Mayor John McCormac won "Best Tasting" for his grilled brown sugar barbeque. And South Amboy Mayor Jack O'Leary won "Best Overall" for his stuffed filet mignon.

The mayor said earlier that she plans to hang the award in town hall and use it as impetus to start wellness programs in Scotch Plains.
