Forty-four political and religious leaders were arrested.

The FBI arrested 44 New Jersey politicians and religious leaders on Thursday, charging some with public corruption and others for their involvement in an international money laundering ring.

Among them were Jersey City Deputy Mayor Leona Beldini, Jersey City Council President Mariano Vega Jr., Assemblyman L. Harvey Smith, Hoboken Mayor Peter Cammarano, Secaucus Mayor Dennis Elwall, and Assemblyman Daniel M. Van Pelt.

The state's Department of Community Affairs commissioner, Joe Doria, was not among those arrested, but he resigned this afternoon after the FBI raided his home in Bayonne.
