NJ.com: Mayors Want Oversight Commitee for Sewer Authority

Local leaders say they will ask the authority to postpone the adoption of its budget.

The mayors of Clark, Rahway and Woodbridge on Wednesday announced their plans to try and establish a budget oversight committee that would advise the Rahway Valley Sewer Authority to help curb further increases.

The authority raised its budget by more than 30 percent this year, causing significant budget woes for the towns that use it. It was partly responsible for the creation of a sewer utility fee in Scotch Plains.

Scotch Plains' authority commissioner, Joan Pappen, said she doesn't think an oversight committee can legally be created. Mayor Nancy Malool said she started raising questions earlier this year as to why the authority couldn't cut costs.
