Progress of Teacher Contracts Discussed at BOE Meeting

Tentative Memorandum of Agreement exists between BOE and SPFEA

The Negotiation Committee of the Scotch Plains-Fanwood Board of Education(BOE) has been meeting with negotiators of Scotch Plains-Fanwood Education Association(SPFEA) for the past several months in order to strike a possible deal on teacher contracts.

As of now, there is a tentative agreement that exists between the Scotch Plains-Fanwood BOE and SPFEA.

However, for the members of the board who are not on the negotiation committee, tonight's Board of Education meeting was their first look at the Memorandum of Agreement.

This past June the contracts of Scotch Plains-Fanwood teachers expired. Most teachers have also yet to see the tentative agreement.

The next step will be presenting the particulars to the teachers and letting them ask questions.

Currently there exists a salary guide that the teachers follow. There is an allocated amount of money for teachers' salary and what is left to be determined is how the set amount will be distributed.

Once the language and specifics of the agreement are worked out, it will then go to the teachers and the boards of both the Scotch Plains-Fanwood BOE and SPFEA on whether or not to be motioned forward. If both say yes, that is when the agreement would be official.

This is the first time in district history that a rough agreement has existed before the school year began.
