Samuel Honored for Service to Democrats

The former chair stepped down in December.

The Scotch Plains Democratic Committee honored its outgoing chairman Wednesday night.

The committee presented Richard Samuel with a plaque commemorating his service to the organization. Among those in attendance were Union County Clerk Joanne Rajoppi and Assemblywoman Linda Stender.

Samuel stepped down from the post in December due to what he called recurring health issues which have interfered with his ability to be involved with day-to-day committee activities.

He has been replaced by vice chair Louis Beckerman.

Samuel's last year as chairman was often spent challenging the mayor and council on decisions such as the new sewer utility bill. Samuel filed a lawsuit earlier this year alleging that the mayor and council held “secret” discussions during this past budget season and that the mayor went beyond her allowed duties. The suit was ultimately dismissed by the state.
