This Week Ahead: Week of Monday, April 16

Earth week, community clean-up, fundraisers, and art shows are among the highlights of the happenings around town this week.

On Saturday, April 21 at 5 p.m., in Scotch Plains will hosting The Karen Gielen Tricky Tray and Spaghetti Dinner Fundraiser. Karen is 39 years old and has six children.  She has been battling breast cancer for 3 years now and at this point the medical bills are so high she can no longer keep up. In addition her husband recently lost his job. The goal of the tricky tray is to raise funds for her treatments and start a college fund for her children.

Tickets are $20 at the door and include a starter pack of raffle tickets and dinner. The drawings will begin at 7 p.m. E-mail KarenGielenFund@yahoo.com for info on how to purchase your tickets or call(908)418-8535.  All are welcome.

In celebration of Earth Week, will be collecting gently used plastic toys from 8:15 to 9:30 a.m. on Tuesday, April 17, on the front lawn of the school. The toys will be donated to Second Chance Toys, a 501c3 non profit that collects gently used plastic toys and distributes them to children in need. 1-800-Got-Junk? has volunteered to cart the toys directly to New Community Harmony House in Newark. They will receive hundreds of toys for the children in some of their pre-school programs and homeless shelters.

More in schools: On Saturday, April 21, will be having a clothing drive from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. will be hosting the spring book fair all week. Evergreen Elementary will be celebrating student art work with the spring art show at 6 p.m. on Tuesday, April 16. Italian Club will be hosting a pasta night in the High School cafeteria on Wednesday, April 25, at 6 p.m.

On Friday, April 20, 2012 and Sunday, April 22, 2012 of Fanwood/Scotch Plains will commemorate Yom HaShoah (Holocaust Remembrance Day) with a free two-part program open to the public, funded by the congregation’s Nathanson Adult Education Fund.  Both events will feature a presentation from people who, as teenagers, experienced Nazi oppression first hand; one escaped with her family from Germany, the other survived the horrors of Auschwitz. The first event will begin at 7 p.m. on Friday, April 20. The second event will begin at 7 p.m. on Sunday, April 22.

Celebrate Earth Day by cleaning up your community! Fanwood Clean-up day begins with a gathering around the clock at the Fanwood train station  at 8:30 a.m. on Saturday, April 21. Trash pick up occurs at the train station and all around town.
