9/11 Memorial Rededicated by High School Students

The event was postponed because of the rainy weather last Friday.

It may have been a few days late, but the meaning was just as strong.

Students and faculty from Scotch Plains-Fanwood High School gathered Tuesday afternoon to rededicate their 9/11 memorial. The event was scheduled to occur on the anniversary of 9/11, but was rescheduled due to inclement weather.

The memorial, which is by the Evergreen Elementary softball fields, is a sequoia tree with a plaque in front that reads "In memory of the heroes of 9/11, An event that changed the world now and for generations to come. Student Government Association 2001-2002." Flowers flank the plaque.

The sequia tree was planted in the spring of 2002 as a constant reminder of the events of that day and the heroes that emerged. Each year, the tree is rededicated on the anniversary of the terrorist attacks.

This year's ceremony opened with a speech from principal Dr. David Heisey, who explained that the sequoia was chosen because it becomes a towering tree and would therefore be a fitting memorial for the fallen twin towers. The tree was three to four feet tall when planted, and has already grown to at least twice that height.

The high school choir marked the memorial by singing "The Star Spangled Banner" and "God Bless America."  Members of the Student Government Association also gave short speeches about 9/11 and placed fresh bouquets of red, white and blue flowers in front of the tree.
