Art History Lectures at the SP Library

The press release below was distributed by the Scotch Plains Public Library on Sept. 27.

The presents two art history programs with local Social Studies educator Andrea Karanik. Both are free and open to all interested participants.

On Thursday, Oct. 13, at 7 p.m., the topic will be “”Monuments and Memorials: How We Remember.” Karanik will lecture and show slides of structures and sculptures, tombs, sarcophagi, pyramids and roadside memorials. Together the group will explore the many ways that cultures, including our own, memorialize fallen heroes, departed loved ones and significant events.

On Monday, Dec. 12, at 7 p.m., attention will be directed to “Sacred Spaces,” as Karanik takes us to familiar places and distant locales including Angkor Wat and Chechen Itza. The group will see ways that spirituality and belief translate into art and architecture, and how those creations in turn enhance our understanding of the cultures that produced them.
