Board of Education Bids Farewell to Two Members

Rob O'Connor and Donald Parisi participated in their final meeting Thursday night.

Thursday night marked the final Board of Education meeting for veteran board members Rob O’Connor and Donald Parisi. Earlier this year, the two decided to not seek re-election for their seats. The meeting – the board's monthly agenda meeting – was brief and, in lieu of time, board members opted to table proper goodbyes for a later date. But a few members did share short salutations that touched on Parisi and O'Connor's accomplishments and dedication.

“I have to say, it’s been an honor and a privilege to work with you,” board member Betty Anne Woerner said. “This is a volunteer, good-of-your-heart thing, and you both have put in so much time and effort for this community and school district. It’s touching, and it reminds me of the commitment that you see in prior generations more than now to give back to the community, rather than just writing a check. A big thank you.”

O’Connor returned the sentiment, stating that he was grateful to have had the opportunity to work with individuals who shared his interest in improving education.

“I had no idea seven years ago what I was getting into,” he said. “More importantly, I didn’t know how hard everybody works, everybody on the board. There’s a lot of passion here, and a lot of people are so talented. There are plenty of brains here that could have made zillions of dollars, but instead they have a passion to educate our children to make our world better. I’m very fortunate for the experience.”

For his final act as a Board member, Parisi requested to read a motion on the agenda. Appropriately, the motion was a proclamation designating the week of May 2 as "Teacher Appreciation Week." Among other things, the proclamation states that, “it is appropriate that teachers be recognized for their dedication and commitment to educating…children.”

“This is the last motion I’m going to vote on as a board member, so I really wanted to read this,” he said. “I really appreciate you giving me the opportunity.”

Parisi and O’Connor’s departure leaves two seats vacant on the Board of Education – one each for Scotch Plains and Fanwod. Board member Warren McFall, who helps represent Scotch Plains, is also seeking reelection to retain his seat. Elections will take place Wednesday, April 27, from 2 to 9 p.m. The next regular public meeting takes place May 26.
