Brief: Greens for Greenbacks

The Scotch Plains-Fanwood Athletics and Music Boosters hosted a joint fundraiser at Shackamaxon Country Club on Monday.

The Scotch Plains-Fanwood Athletics and Music Boosters raised more than $8,000 at a joint fundraiser at Shackamaxon Country Club on Monday. The event drew 52 golfers and another 57 supporters for the dinner and raffle that evening.

"It was a nice turnout," Athletics Boosters president Ava McNamara said in a telephone interview. "I think people really enjoyed themselves."

The boosters organizations split the proceeds in half, McNamara said. The money helps fund scholarships, certificates and awards, equipment and "wish list" items from the coaches.

This year's event drew fewer people and raised less money than last year, largely a result of the recession, McNamara said. Last year, the event grossed more than $10,000.

The Sports Boosters' next event takes place Wednesday, when athletes will have their pictures taken for the "Fall Sports Program." The program will be sold at fall home games, McNamara said.

The Music Boosters' next event takes place Thursday, when the high school's marching band presents a preview of its 2010 program, "Generation Millennium." The performance starts at 6:30 p.m. at the high school football field.
