Families, children and faculty celebrated on September 5th to open the 50th school year of Christopher Academy, a Montessori school serving children from 2 1/2 years old through First Grade. Over the last fifty years, Christopher Academy has served thousands of families and children in the Montessori Method between its two campuses in Westfield and Scotch Plains.
Christopher Academy’s anniversary also secures it as the oldest Montessori school in the State of New Jersey. The Montessori Method offers an exceptional learning environment, tailored to the individual child, driven by the community. With homelike classrooms, the Christopher Academy is filled with hands-on materials, each with a lesson to learn and a problem to solve. Students enjoy a prepared environment designed to recognize and propel each child to learn, to grow, to achieve at the most appropriate pace to the best of his or her own ability. “The Method follows the natural development of children,” said Henriette Petersen, Director of Operations, “Much of what seems standard in traditional preschools was actually developed in Montessori classrooms. We’re proud to be a part of that legacy.”
“There are too many wonderful memories to count,” said the school’s President, Amelia McTamaney, “ But none compares to seeing parents who are also alumni return with their own children.” The school community has planned a number of events in honor of the anniversary, including a gala for the Spring which will welcome alumni and their families back to campus.
Christopher Academy invites its alumni from the past fifty years to reconnect with the school and to join in the festivities. “Drop us an email, or come back to visit the classrooms,” welcomes McTamaney, “Our students are our family.”
The mission of Christopher Academy is to support the full development of the child by serving individual needs, fostering independence and protecting the social consciousness within an environment that celebrates a love of learning. Parents interested in learning more about the school or the Montessori Method are welcomed to join us for an Open House at our Westfield campus on October 18th at 9:30AM or at our Scotch Plains campus on November 15th at 7:30PM.
