Don't Miss Beads of Hope: A Night of Celebration

The event will begin tonight at SPFHS at 7:30 to raise funds for women in Uganda through the sale of fair trade jewelry made by the women in Uganda.

Tonight the Rotary Club together with Scotch Plains-Fanwood High School’s Interact Club will be hosting Beads of Hope: A Night of Celebration at 7:30 at the High School. Come and enjoy entertainment provided by local musicians and entertainers as well as SPFHS students while fundraising to help empower and meet the needs of impoverished young girls of Kampala, Uganda.

Beads of Hope supports the women of Set Her Free, a nonprofit organization that helps rehabilitate the women of Uganda.

“Set Her Free is working to restore the lives of young girls formerly enslaved by the sex trades—the most vile form of child labor. We currently run a home situated in the Kawempe division of Kampala, Uganda. This serves as a home that provides not only food and shelter, but also formal education, technical training, counseling, medical care, mentoring, and resettlement opportunities. We give them love, support, and the chance to succeed,” the organization notes.

As part of the rehabilitation and empowerment efforts, the women of Set Her Free create beautiful, unique jewelry out of colorful recycled paper. These creations help generate an income for their families through the fair trade sales of the jewelry overseas.

Inspired by her two daughters’ passion for the women of Uganda, Kiran Dhaliwal, a member of the Rotary Club localized this movement, working with her daughter Madelyne, a SPFHS senior and Interact member to organize tonight’s event. Last year, SPFHS raised 1,000 dollars through the sale of Beads of Hope.  Dhaliwal’s commitment to this movement began when her older daughter Meaghan traveled to Uganda where she met a woman named Robinah who rescues women and children from brothels.  After returning to Scotch Plains, Meaghan and Kiran raised 1,500 dollars in one day through the sale of Beads of Hope jewelry.

“A friend of mine told me when she wears the necklace it’s like ‘wearing a prayer around your neck.’ The analogy is quite real,” Dhaliwal stated.

Tickets for tonight’s event are 20 dollars for adults (including a Beads of Hope bracelet), 10 dollars for students including a free bracelet, and five dollars for students without a bracelet.  Jewelry will also be on sale during intermission.

“Remember 100% of all proceeds will go to help Robinah and her beautiful girls in the home of “Set Her Free”. Your attendance will make a difference,” Dhaliwal stated.
