Great Swamp National Wildlife Refuge at the Scotch Plains Public Library

Spring is the perfect time to explore the Great Swamp, a stunning natural area, located just minutes from Scotch Plains.  The public is invited to Scotch Plains Public Library at 2:00 pm on Saturday, March 26th to hear Jack Higgins talk about this wildlife refuge and all it offers. Visitors can hike on marked trails in a Federal Wilderness area, or walk on fully accessible boardwalk trails through woods and over swamps to three observation blinds. They can observe birds at feeders or look down in the swamp at frogs, snakes and turtles.  They can stop at overlooks off the main road to observe blue birds, raptors, and various migrating waterfowl.

The main Visitors Center has several wildlife displays, displays on the history of the swamp, a wildflower garden with several bird feeders for close-up observation, a discovery den with several interactive exhibits, a library, a kids korner and a bookstore and nature shop. The Great Swamp is just 10 miles from Scotch Plains and access is free of charge.

The Scotch Plains Library is located at 1927 Bartle Avenue, one block from Park Avenue in the center of town. All  programs at the Scotch Plains Public Library are free and open to all interested participants. Attendees are encouraged to register through the library’s website: http://www.scotlib.org or by phone: 908-322-5007, x.204 or e-mail library@scotlib.org
