Six Week Spring Series Tours and Lectures - Scotch Plains Public Library

The Scotch Plains Public Library, for six weeks this spring,  is offering a series of tours and lectures that will focus on the cities of New Jersey.  World-class speakers and authors will present programs on the cities they know best.  All programs with the exception of an optional restaurant lunch on April 8th are free of charge and open to all interested adult participants.  Attendees may register for individual sessions or the entire series.

The first program will be held on Friday, April 8th.  Clement A. Price, New Jersey’s preeminent public historian will lead a bus and walking tour exclusively for our group.  A chartered bus will leave the Scotch Plains Public Library parking lot at 9:00 am and return at 4:00 pm.  The tour, “Newark: The Brick City Yesterday, Today and Tomorrow,” will start at historic Military Park, and continue at sites including Newark Museum, Newark Public Library,  the Central ward, 4th precinct, New Jersey Historical Society, Hopewell Baptist Church/B’nai Jeshrun, University Heights, and the Downtown corridor.  Participants can pay for a moderately-priced lunch at a notable Newark restaurant or bring your own.  High school juniors and seniors may attend with a parent’s or guardian’s signed consent. Freshmen and sophomores must be accompanied by responsible adults.

Discussion and audience input will be an important part of all the programs. By bringing together leading humanities scholars with residents of our communities, the series will examine the roles that our cities play in our lives now, their impact in the past, and possibilities for future engagement between the suburban and urban communities in our area.
