"Sukkot-The Festival of Booths"

This month, you are invited to join Temple Sholom’s “Sukkot—The Festival of Booths,” a three-class series that is part of the Reform congregation’s Eitz Chayim adult education program.  Taught by Rabbi Joel Abraham, participants will explore the harvest festival’s origins, how it is celebrated around the world and even how to build your own sukkah.  Sukkot will take place in October this year.

Jackie Lieberman, a member of Temple Sholom and blogger (WeBoughtASukkah.blogspot.com) looks forward to learning how to create a fantastic Sukkot experience with her family. “I can’t wait to build and decorate a sukkah with my husband and our kids,” says Lieberman, who admits that she plans to use the holiday as an excuse to throw a party.  “For most of my life, Sukkot was something we only talked about at Temple and that I barely noticed on the calendar.  Now that I’m learning more about it, I think I’ve been missing out on a really fun holiday.”

"Sukkot is the perfect fall holiday,” says Rabbi Abraham. “It’s an excuse to be outside, an excuse to buy pumpkins and fall produce and an excuse to invite friends over and show off your sukkah."

The class will take place from 7:30 until 8:30 on Thursday evenings, September 8, September 15 and September 22.

Also, from September through November, study “Joining the Tribe—a history of conversion and intermarriage,” on Tuesday mornings from 10:30 am until noon, discuss Jewish stories that revolve around lifecycle events in “Four Weddings & a Funeral” on Thursday evenings from 8:30pm until 9:30pm and, starting in October, “Funerals, Shiva Shloshim & Yizkor—understanding Jewish rituals of mourning,” on Thursday evenings from 7:30pm until 8:30pm.

Temple Sholom is located in the Fanwood Presbyterian Church at the corner of Martine and LaGrande Avenues in Fanwood, NJ. Classes will be held in the Colville room. For more information, call 908-889-4900, e-mail sholom@sholomnj.org or visit www.sholomnj.org.
