Teen Summer Library Programs - Scotch Plains Library

Teens are invited to travel around the world without leaving Scotch Plains this summer, by participating in Scotch Plains Public Library’s Teen Summer Programs.  This year’s theme is “You are Here”.  Registration, limited to Scotch Plains and Fanwood cardholders entering 6th through 12th grade, begins at 9:00 am on Monday, June 27, 2011 in person, by phone, or online: http://www.scotlib.org/sppl/teens/

Summer reading participants can track their reading geographically on a giant world map and chronologically, online or on paper logs available when you register. Readers earn prizes for every 5 hours they log!

African masks and percussion, balloon twisting and crafts workshops, maple snow cones for Canada Day, henna, saris and jewels to celebrate India, and ever-popular Wii programs are some of the programs that will take us around the world this summer!

Starting in mid-July teen librarians Colleen and Robin will offer read-aloud book clubs suitable all reading levels in middle school and early high school.  No prep is required – just come and take a turn reading to the group. Stay for snacks and discussion, too.  The books will be Sisterhood of the traveling Pants, by Ann Brashares (Wednesdays at 6) for rising 8th graders and up, and When You Reach Me, by Rebecca Stead (Thursdays at 4) for rising 6th graders and up. Books will be kept in the library in between meetings.

We begin a 6-week series of chess workshops for teens, given by Render Cutts of Let’s Play Chess! on July 11.  No experience is necessary.  Free Beginning Guitar Workshops will be offered
by Chris Brown from Center Stage Music’s new home above Scoops on Route 22.  Chris will supply guitars. Both programs have limited enrollment and priority will be given to teens who can commit to attending most sessions.

Speaking of Scoops…Once again our friends there are offering prizes of free ice cream for dedicated readers. That’s just the beginning of our food adventures, brought to us through the generosity of local businesses.  All community members are invited to sample exotic fruits, courtesy of King’s Supermarkets, right after our film showing of Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon, on Saturday, July 9th.  In addition, Starbuck’s Coffee and Savory Spice Shop in Westfield will offer delicious programs for the entire community, as a free community service.

These programs are offered  through the generosity of the Friends of the Scotch Plains Library.
